Standard Bank Mozambique announced on 22 November the appointment of Esselina Macome as the new Chairperson of the bank’s Board of Directors
“From the 1st of December of the current year, Dr Esselina Macome will take office as Chairman of the Board of Directors (PCA),” a Standard Bank press release announces.
Macome’s replacement of Tomaz Salomão, who held the position for 18 years, will help make the bank “relevant and systemic in the Mozambican market”, the institution declares.
Macome’s appointment results from “the most recent good governance practices, which recommend the rotation of non-executive members of organisations”.
The bank believes that Esselina Macome is “capable of leading the execution of Standard Bank’s growth strategy for the coming years”, maintaining and upholding “the highest standards of risk management and compliance”.
“The bank and its majority shareholder, the Standard Bank Group, place the utmost confidence in Dr Esselina Macome to lead Standard Bank,” the communique reads.
Prior to her appointment, Dr Macome served as a non-executive director of Standard Bank, one of Mozambique’s leading banks, in addition to being an independent non-executive member of its board of directors.
The new Standard Bank Mozambique chair holds a PhD in information and communication technologies (ICT), and is an associate professor at Eduardo Mondlane University and Chief Executive Officer at FSDMoz (Financial Sector Deepening, Mozambique).
